Record lake levels and persistent rain this spring have given the Town of Georgina extra work to keep Lake Simcoe from interfering with the Georgina Spring Fling race. Residents along the course on Lake Drive East have battled water encroaching on their property, sometimes reaching as high as two feet deep on the road. The Town of Georgina stepped up and provided free sand and bags, as well as installing their own barriers and pumps at the lowest spots to safeguard the road and help protect resident property.
“One of the residents I spoke with who lives near Lagoon Drive suggested that a north wind on race day could cause waves that might interfere with the race,” says co-race director Sandie Orlando. “It’s the worst flooding he had seen in his 35 years living there.” Fortunately, the weather has settled enough and lighter winds from the west are forecast for race day. Temperatures will be colder than usual, but the race will go as planned. The only addition to the fast, flat and scenic course that has attracted over 1,800 participants this year is what the race organizers are referring to as the ‘Lagoon Lump’. Runners will cross a short, raised surface to cross water pipes temporarily installed to regulate the waters in the area. Marshals will be present to ensure runners cross it safely, and the Georgina Alligator mascot may make an appearance there, as well. “Athletes have been training through snow, ice and rain all winter to prepare for this event, so this is nothing new for the runners,” adds co-race director Cindy Lewis. “We are doing what we can to add some levity to the situation.”
Endurance Event Productions has been working with the town to maintain a safe course for the runners, and ensure residents have access to their homes. The town is providing a number to call for an escort by their by-law vehicles for drivers who need to travel east bound during the race.
“Both runners and residents need to be aware that the road will be shared and cooperation is required,” says Albert Ngai, course manager. “Kindness and patience will go a long way to making the experience positive for everyone.”
